Angela Mortimer plc was recommended to me by another agency midst recession in 2009. I was keen to work in a company that offered progression, high earning potential and the ability to have autonomy in your role. Angela Mortimer has proved to be just this. I quickly progressed from the graduate role of ‘Operations Coordinator’ to become a trainee recruitment consultant in 6 months, developing a temp book from scratch and working closely with a hugely inspirational Divisional Leader. I saw my career progress from recruiting temps to building my own desk of clients seeking permanent candidates before being promoted to Team Leader within 3 years of joining the company.

As with most of us, I had always wondered if the grass was greener, so after 5.5 years I made the tough decision to try something new. I was then placed by a rec2rec for another recruitment agency. A key difference stood out to me straight away – Angela Mortimer has a fantastic system whereby we trade our candidates to other consultants’ roles, our “Internal Market”. This is something a lot of recruiters don’t have. This means you can start earning straight away on a cold desk. It also gives candidates more opportunities and allows you to work in a truly collaborative culture with your colleagues.

A lot of agencies have very convoluted and complex commission structures which essentially mask the fact that unless you have been in the company a long time with an established desk it’s very hard to earn commission. Angela Mortimer’s structure is very simple and clear with the added bonus of Profit Share every 6 months. Realising I’d made a bad move, an opportunity arose working in-house for a global property company – I relished this chance and very much enjoyed my year working within HR. However, I missed having full control of my career, progression and, of course, the opportunity to influence my own earnings.

Testament to the great relationships you build at Angela Mortimer, my previous Director who had become a close friend was quick to offer me an opportunity to return as a Divisional Leader to set up my own team within the company – the chance to build something of my own in a truly supportive and entrepreneurial environment saw me return at the end of last year. I have billed over £92k in the first two quarters of 2016, and now have a team of 3 working with me. We plan to keep growing!

I started my career at Angela Mortimer – as many of us do! – by registering as a candidate. I came to interview after leaving University – initially thinking I’d just get some temporary work and was really impressed by how thorough and engaging my consultant was. When she suggested the graduate scheme to me I was really pleased, as it sounded like a much more career-focused opportunity than others I’d heard about or been offered before. The graduate scheme seemed to offer not just a job but a career, which was exactly what I was looking for post-University; I just didn’t know where to start looking for it!

I joined Angela Mortimer 4 years ago as an Operations Coordinator, and within 2 years I became a Team Leader. I’ve really enjoyed what I feel to have been the unique combination of structure and support, and freedom and autonomy on offer at Angela Mortimer. I’ve been allowed and encouraged to develop my own personal career path at my own pace. It has been a brilliant first job and because of the people I get to meet and work with, it continues to interest and engage me!

Graduating from University I was a classic case of ‘what do I do now?’ As with most students post-grad I went back to living with my parents, who were in Cambridge at the time. After a week or so of job hunting, I began working in a temporary employment branch of the University of Cambridge in an office administration capacity. As time went on my role developed and I got my first taste of recruitment, processing CVs and arranging cover for various offices across the University.

I first heard about Angela Mortimer from a colleague who used AM to recruit her office-based staff when she worked within Goldman Sachs. After some research and submitting my CV, I began the interview process of joining the company as an Operations Coordinator.

During my interview process, the close-knit ‘family’ feel of the company quickly became clear. I had been for interviews with other recruitment agencies, however AM definitely stood out. After starting my role as an ‘Op’ in September 2015, I soon realised the pivotal role I was in. Working within a team of 4, my knowledge and understanding of the company grew on a daily basis. Forming solid working relationships with consultants and staff, I couldn’t wait to join the ‘other side’.

In November 2015, after being ‘signed off’, the opportunities seemed endless! After meeting various Team Leaders to gauge positions and openings on teams, I pitched three business plans and got three offers with a view to starting my recruitment career in the New Year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the training I received upon joining in February and found myself fully immersed in all aspects of the role in no time at all. Whilst growing my desk and hitting commission targets each month, I have found AM to be an extremely supportive environment where success isn’t just encouraged—it’s actively reinforced. The processes in place along with an extremely inspirational leadership team make hitting commission and earning money easily accessible. Weekly training and continuous development evaluation is just one way that demonstrates you are in control of your own business and progress. I am extremely positive about my future at AM with views to becoming a Team Leader.
